Let's Begin
Lesson 1: Let's Begin Our Study of Revelation
Welcome to the course, Understanding Revelation. I believe that the time
you spend with me in this wonderful book will inspire you and be a source
of tremendous encouragement and hope. That is my prayer for you. Let’s
address some important questions.
Why Study Biblical Prophecy
There are several reasons why it is important to study prophecy, or
predictions about the future, in the Bible. First, all of God's Word is meant
to be understood and applied to our lives. This includes prophecies, which
can give us insight into God's plans and purposes. Second, as Christians,
we are called to live godly lives and to be ready for Christ's return. Studying
prophecy can help us to better understand what is expected of us and how
we can prepare for the future. Third, the Bible warns us that we may face
persecution and even martyrdom as followers of Christ. Knowing what is
predicted to happen in the future can help us to be prepared for these
challenges and to remain faithful in the face of adversity. Fourth, the Bible
tells us that Christ may return soon, and it is important for us to be ready for
his return. Studying prophecy can help us to stay alert and to be ready for
his coming. Finally, studying prophecy can give us hope for the future. It
can remind us that, despite the challenges and difficulties we may face in
this life, God has a plan and purpose for us and that one day we will be
reunited with him in heaven.
Why Study Revelation
The Book of Revelation, also known as the Apocalypse, is the final book of
the Bible. It is a book of prophecy that contains symbolic imagery and
language. There are several reasons why studying the Book of Revelation
can be beneficial for Christians:
- It explains how God will conclude history: The Book of Revelation describes the end times and the events that will take place during this period, including the return of Jesus Christ and the final judgment. This can help us understand God's plan for the world and how he will bring it to a close.
- It prepares us for Christ's return: The Book of Revelation reminds us that Jesus will one day return to earth, and it encourages us to be ready for his coming. It also reminds us to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to God, knowing that we will one day give an account for our actions.
- We learn about the hope of heaven: The Book of Revelation describes the wonderful things that will be available to those who are saved and live in heaven with God. This can give us hope and encouragement as we face the challenges of this life.
- It leads people to Christ: The Book of Revelation contains messages of warning and judgment for those who reject God, but it also contains messages of hope and salvation for those who turn to Jesus. By studying the Book of Revelation, we can learn how to share the gospel with others and lead them to Christ.
- It leads us into worship: The Book of Revelation is filled with descriptions of the majesty and glory of God, which can inspire us to worship him more fully. As we study the Book of Revelation, we can learn more about who God is and how great he is, which can deepen our love and devotion to him.
- We will be blessed: The Book of Revelation promises blessings for those who study it and understand its message. By seeking to understand and apply the teachings of the Book of Revelation, we can grow in our faith and experience the blessings that God has for us.
Here are some wonderful passages that speak of the return of Jesus being a tremendous source of personal hope. Let the truth of these passages sink into your soul. “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,” (Titus 2:11-13) “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:1-3) “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.” (Col 3:1-4)
Two Common Mistakes
One common mistake that people make when interpreting the book of Revelation is not understanding the language that it is written in. The book is written in a combination of Hebrew and Greek, and it uses a great deal of symbolic language that can be difficult to interpret. It is important to understand the meaning of the words and symbols in order to properly interpret the book. In this course, we will strive to understand the significance of the symbolic language used in Revelation. Another common mistake is not understanding the structure of the book. The book of Revelation is not a linear account of events, but rather a series of parallel accounts of the same sequence of events. This means that different sections of the book may describe the same event from different perspectives. It is important to understand the structure of the book in order to properly interpret its meaning. Overall, interpreting Revelation requires an understanding of the language, symbols, and structure of the book. It is a challenging task that requires careful study and interpretation. We will take on that challenge together in this course.
Overcoming Interpretive Challenges
Interpreting the Bible, especially the book of Revelation, can be challenging because of the symbolic language and often complex structure of the text. It's important to approach the interpretation process with a careful and critical mindset, and to be aware of the potential biases and assumptions that may influence your understanding. One key strategy for overcoming interpretation challenges is to determine what is symbolic and what is literal in the text. In most cases, your common sense can serve as a good guide. Unless you have a good reason to see something as symbolic, it's usually best to assume that the text is literal. Another important aspect to consider is the structure of Revelation. This book was given in four separate visions, so it's not a continuous narrative. Interpreting it as such can lead to confusion and misunderstandings. Instead, it's important to understand the overall structure of the book and how the different visions fit together. It's also important to be aware of the potential for assumptions to influence your interpretation. Always assess your assumptions against the text of Scripture and be open to the possibility that your understanding may be influenced by faulty presuppositions. One way to avoid letting assumptions influence your interpretation is to consider and compare full biblical texts, rather than relying on isolated verses. It's important to read entire passages and let scripture interpret scripture, rather than using extra-biblical concepts to form assumptions. This can also involve comparing entire texts outside of Revelation related to the end times with each other to get a better understanding of the overall message. Finally, it's important to question what others are teaching, including those who may be famous or have advanced degrees. It's always important to compare what others are saying with what the Bible actually says, and to be open to the possibility that even those who have been studying for many years can be wrong.
Final Thought
Yes, Revelation can be a challenge to understand, but your efforts will yield both insight and blessing. Revelation can be understood! Set your fears aside and pray that God will reveal his truth to you through this great book of the Bible.
Peace,
Jim Warner
